The establishment of Taman Ayun Temple is related to the development of Mengwi kingdom in the 17th century. Based on Babad Mengwi, a manuscript of the birth of Mengwi kingdom describes that the founder of the kingdom was I Gusti Ngurah Putu. After succeeding in extending his emporium he then built the Ulun Danu Temple on the bank of Lake Beratan. Afterwards he moved his palace from Balahayu (now Belayu village) to Mengwi and built Taman Ayun Temple. It is constructed on 1634 AD. As the common layout of a temple in Bali, it is divided into 3 courtyards, where on the west side is the natural pool by constructing dam across a small river on the southern end of the temple area. On main complex there a "Meru"dedicated to the god of fertility which is closely related to rice and irrigation called "Shrines of Ulun Swi". At one side of the eastern part is a shrine of the spirit warrior Pasek Buduk from Buduk village, the reason of the king built a worship to a spirit of Pasek Buduk, due to unending war between Mengwi and Buduk village.
  • Alas Kedaton - a holy monkey forest where hundreds of tame monkeys and fruit bats will entertain you with their antic.
  • Tanah Lot Temple - an important temple perched on a jagged rock jutting into the sea and nearly cut off from the mainland of Bali by wave erosion. No historical record is found so far to construct the history of the temple but scripture of Dang Hyang Nirartha mentions that the priest Dang Hyang Nirartha had visited the temple and asked the people around the area to build shrine. While the priest also educate the fisherman in making fish trap. The temple as a whole is dedicated to the God of the sea, where fisherman pray to get fish and prosperity.
